Destination weddings have become increasingly popular over the years. The allure of being somewhere far away and creating a magical setting for your special day is tempting for many. The environment often lends itself to a smaller crowd, allowing you to share this moment in a more private and intimate setting.

While it seems like a dream come true, destination weddings come with unique considerations—especially when choosing your wedding dress. Here are some things to keep in mind as you search for the perfect dress for your special day.

Travel

Choosing a destination wedding typically involves travel, often by airplane, and this can impact your dress decision. Opt for a dress that can easily fit into an airplane cabin. Some airlines allow wedding dresses to be stored in the captain's closet if you ask in advance, so it’s worth calling ahead! If that’s not an option, always plan to bring your dress as a carry-on. Never check your wedding dress with other luggage—losing it could be a nightmare. When packing it as a carry-on, rolling the dress often works better than folding since it will wrinkle, but it won’t get hard creases.

If you’re driving, lay the dress as flat as possible to keep it in good condition. Always keep it in a protected garment bag to avoid picking up dust or debris from your car.

Whether flying or driving, expect some wrinkles upon arrival. We recommend bringing a steamer to help smooth out any creases or wrinkles. And keep in mind that the dress size matters for travel; while you can still choose a ballgown, it may be more challenging to transport!

Destination Venue

Destination weddings can take place in a variety of settings, from all-inclusive resorts with paved sidewalks and open ceremony spaces to more rugged locations like mountaintops or sandy beaches. Consider the terrain when choosing your dress. Will you be able to hike in it? Could it get caught up in the sand? Understanding the venue can help you decide which fabrics and silhouettes will be best. For instance, a flowy A-line dress may be ideal for longer walks since it moves easily, while a fitted dress could work well on a beach as it won’t blow around as much.

Weather

Weather is a huge factor in a wedding day celebration. Researching the climate of your chosen destination during your wedding season is essential to selecting a dress that suits the conditions. For example, getting married on the equator in a long-sleeve ballgown could leave you at risk of heat exhaustion, while a chiffon, strapless A-line dress at the top of a mountain might leave you shivering. Preparing for the weather can make all the difference in your experience, so we always recommend looking ahead!

While these tips are helpful, the most important thing is to choose a dress that makes you feel happy, comfortable, and confident. Your destination wedding will be beautiful no matter what you decide!
